The greatest invention in the world: the trenches of the title. Trenches were the reason due to which small area was gained in the expense of a large army, but I am surprised, becuase according to that logic, WW1 should had more casualities than WW2

Trenches were the reason due to which small area was gained in the expense of a large army, but I am surprised, becuase according to that logic, WW1 should had more casualities than WW2 It has, Western front of WW1 has way more casualties than WW2 Western front, but the reason of fewer casualties was that no country massacred civilians and POWs in ww1 on the scale as it was done in Russia and China in WW2.

I think because of Defensive tactics that were developed were more effective like Defense-in-depth,etc.
