The Year is 1941.
World War 2 is in it's third year.
Nazi Germany and its revolutionary "Blitzkrieg" have steamrolled Poland, Denmark, Norway, Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg and France, and have left Great Britain standing alone.
At the same time, Germany's main ally in Europe, Italy, have yet to make any real impact on the war and their leader, Benito Mussolini, has grown increasingly impatient.
Mussolini dreams of recreating the glory of Rome and restoring Italy to a global player.
Expansions into East Africa and Albania have been successful but Mussolini is not satisfied. He wants more land and a spearhead in the Mediterranean.
As such, Mussolini looks at a map, and sees the perfect place to invade; Italy's old rival, Greece.
The Greeks are long gone from the days of Thermopylae, Alexander and the Heroes of Mythology.
The Greek Army is a relic from the last great war, armed with obsolete weaponry and poorly trained and commanded.
Mussolini chuckles to himself. "This will be a cakewalk!" He thinks to himself.
A few days later, Mussolini sends a very clear telegraph to the Greek government, demanding they surrender and become an Italian colony.
Mussolini had given the Greek PM, Ioannis Metaxas, 3 days to respond. To his surprise, he receives a response in just three hours.
Mussolini chuckled. "I guess they didn't want to waste any time! They must be shaking in their boots!" He thought.
Mussolini opens the telegraph, takes a good look, and nearly falls out of his chair. Recovering from the initial shock, He looks over the telegraph again, wondering if he is mistaken.
But there is no mistake. On the telegraph is one, solitary word...
OXI. No.
Part 2 to follow...

Also, I would not say that they are very poorly commanded in defense, Alexandros Papagos was one of the best defensive commanders in Balkan history. I would say that Cavallero was the poor commander.

They lost because they thought Yugoslavia will not fall.
