Russia has officially invaded Ukraine. They claim its a "special military operation" but we know what it really is: a declaration of war.
I believe this is only the start. If we do nothing, we will see other Eastern states being taken. Russia is using the same reasons Nazi German used so long ago, "we're doing it to protect the Russian speakers." It is to the same affect of "Danzig was German, Danzig is German, Danzig will always be German."
If no action is taken we will see yet another round of phoney wars.

Hello,
the title should be changed to what it is war.
The strategy behind this operation is for us whith third hand propaganda not to analyse - but we can discuss what more or less - as we know happened.
I believe, an agressor has at least a few different options how to achieve his goals, before to start such an operation. Russia was already sanktionized - that invading a country in peace must lead to a nort corean style isolation was obvious.
With 200k soldiers you can't defeat a country big and strong like the Ukraine. And for sure not with 3 fronts.
This leads to question nr1 what is the war goal Putin wanted or probable still want's to achieve ?
I think: One of the options for the russian was, to get in the first panic immediately hand on the ucrainan president. This failed, but never could be a strategy of such an invasion - but it may explains the immediate strike vs Kiev. All this for grain ?

warlord247, I am not convinced that we should do anything at all. Ukraine is at least as bad as Russia in terms of tyranny and corruption. In addition, I hardly care to send American boys to show up for what most definitely will become a war.

warlord247, I am not convinced that we should do anything at all. Ukraine is at least as bad as Russia in terms of tyranny and corruption. In addition, I hardly care to send American boys to show up for what most definitely will become a war. This was not the question - no country will send troops. Before the attack, Binden personally stated more than clear that Nato would not send any contingents, and that is absolutely right. And that Ukraina and Russia are in many aspects very simmilar, but far away from western standars. The thing is 200 000 Soilders - Not professionals like the US has. No strategist ever can really think that with so little and weak troops you can defeat a country big like the Ukaine. (Even split in 3 flanks) The Ucraine is a big and populatet country, they have more than 40 Million inhabitants, simmilar to Countries like France, Spain or Poland. For me looks it like a big political conspiracy to replace the goverment or president. Planned for Saturday morning did not happen at all, The russians troops moved inside the Ucraina to confuse and then directly support the new president on a incinated Maidan 3. But there was no Putiiinchism - but Putin put all in. I don't understand why a military operatiion is so in focus: The few teenager troops, that Putin uses - let's say 200 000: This is for each soilder more than one squaremile (3 kmĀ²) terrain and 200 Ucrains to control - this can be not the plan - even not on drugs. We should absolutely not send troops.

I absolutely fear that sanctions will eventually lead to military involvement, but it is likely the spirits of the times.
Your proposal that they will invade and simply replace the government seems to be a very astute one.

I have no other clue for a strategy than this missing goverment - replace. As liberator and support for a new goverment the 200 000 soilders are enough. For a hostile invasation never.
Look at the invasion during the Irak War: It took US/BG with 300000 top quipped troops 6 weeks - 30000 rocket bombs and missiles were used and the costs were around 80-100bil US$ - just for the invasion.
I see the biggest risk if there is no exit left for Putin to stop. Win or die - this is so dangerous and can cost many lifes.
